Let’s start off by saying that this wasn’t one of MCC’s finest days, but there were some bright sparks within these two T20s. After stand-in skipper Deep lost the toss we were thrown into the field for a delayed start (cheers umps), and Waqas was raring to go with the ball in his hand and sleeve rolled up. He started with pace and movement, causing the batsmen some problems in a tricky first over. Sandy didn’t start quite so well, with his third ball being dispatched literally over the neighbouring refugee camp. Despite this, the oppo never felt like they got away from us as we picked up regular wickets – notably Cam’s first ball was generous in length (full-toss) and plucked one-handed by Deep at extra cover. Niraj, Cam and Rudi bowled tidly, supported by Pri’s double-wicket maiden in the 19th to restrict CCB to 125/8 after 20.

There were fewer things to write home about in our batting innings as extras second top scored, just one run behind Cam’s 17. Despite our best efforts, the best we could do was plod through to 99 all out, losing the first game by 26 runs. My MOTM is refugee camp security for throwing the ball back multiple times.

We would bat first in the second game and got off to a great start as Rudi plundered the ball to all corners, including three checked pull/punch/flick shots over the deep mid-wicket boundary. Classy. The momentum slowed when Sarang and Cam were out in consecutive balls. Captain Deep faced the hat-trick ball and calmly middled a back-foot defense back to the bowler before making an unbeaten century — wait, no, he was somehow given out (cheers umps). I certainly can’t directly quote Deep’s language here, but I do think he called the umpire a Ben Stokes (whatever that means???). Alas, we struggled again with only Niraj’s well-made 27 to support Rudi’s rapid 46, leaving us to defend a total of 103. Challenging but possible.

Waqas and Sandy opened up again and kept it tidy, but CCB got away from us. A slight pullback near the end with some tight overs from Niraj and Toby have us hope, but ultimately it wasn’t to be. Wasn’t our day but we go again next week. Rudi the clear MOTM in game 2 and if we’d supported him better there would’ve been a strong chance of winning this one. There were also a couple of Keg ball wickets called but I don’t remember who by, sorry lads.

Big shoutouts also to the crowd cheering us on and offering their unwavering support:
Joy – 7/10 – brought us LOTS of water to keep us hydrated

Phil Bowes – 6/10 – passionate support

James Bowes – 10/10 – Star of the show, fantastic handshake for 14 months old, future MCC President I’m sure
