Veser stars in MCC’s determined drive to top of the division 2 table

With the splendid victory over the Pak Orient under our belts but with the Hirschanger still unavailable it was off to the MICS ground in West Park for our fifth league match of the season. Captain Sarma once again lost the toss and we were asked to field. Then it was discovered that the kit was in the chairman’s cellar so we had to borrow kit and purchase a match ball from the MICs.

Their openers scored at around five per over and Scott got the first wicket with Johnson caught behind in the 7th over. In the 18th over with the score on 90 Nielsen got Murali LBW and, at 20 overs, they were 105 for 2 so a reasonable 5 runs per over. Clearly they had something funny in their tea as they scored another 211 runs in the next 20 overs for the loss of only two more wickets finishing on 316 for 4. Best of the MCC bowlers were Scott, Clare and Rabbani.

Mitchell and Veser opened and put on 72 before Mitchell went, bowled for 26 in the 8th over with the score on 72 so we were well up with the required rate. Captain Sarma joined the duck race after four balls and Palfrey accompanied him with a golden one which was a fast, swinging yorker and a horrible ball to get first up. Veser and Carrie put on 48 for the fourth wicket and, at the 20 over mark and no sign of rain or hail, we were 115 for 3 down. Carrie went for 19 in the 21st over, and Veser finally fell for 76 in the 26th with the score on 159. So we were still fairly up with the run rate but apart from Rabbani, who fell for 24, the eighth to go in the 31st over, no one else did anything, apart from join the duck race. In fact Oweis had a hatrick with the last three wickets of the innings and the losing margin was so high that our net run rate for the five league matches played is now negative.
